Design

I have been drawing SF logos
since I found one on my father's
high school notebook.
This time I had to carve it,
or rather... for this fine detail...
mill it.

I have a precision milling machine
and a rotation stage for cutting circles.
With a sliding plate on the stage
I can cut arcs about multiple centers.

This design uses three
equally-spaced centers
arranged in a vertical line.

I feel just a bit guilty...
as if I am somehow cheating
milling mine from brass.

I don't know how
the censor seals were made.
Perhaps they were engraved by hand.
They must have been metal for durability.
What we see on the prints, of course,
are definitely carved by hand
on the wooden printing blocks.

Art form upon art form.
