It is too much to expect, perhaps
that in well over a hundred years
no one else would notice
the virtues of these seals.
Secrest's biography of Wright notes
that his square, red seal... his symbol
is recognized as the influence of Hiroshige
and goes on to mention that
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
among many other artists
borrowed the concept
of the censor seals as well.
Japanese prints were all the rage.
Note, for example, this poster
from 1895, “May Belfort”,
with HTL encircled
and the smaller mark beside it.
Ah well...
I'll bet, at least, that HTL
did not machine his own.
